17th May 2009

The 21 members who travelled to The Abbey Golf & Country Club to contest the Sports & Welfare Shield were greeted by some pleasant sunshine on their arrival, however local weather forecasts proved to be true as the conditions deteriorated as the competition began. Rain, Hail, Thunder & Lightning were all encountered as play progressed. scoring was difficult for all teams with the exception of "the dream team" of Des Lyttle,  Pete Williams & Bob Edwards who ran out winners with a highly creditable score of 80 points, 2 under par for the day. In 2nd place with 72 points ( 6 over ) were Mike Baldwin, Ron Washbrook & Bob Duckett .

Would all members please note that we need at least 16 players for the Greenfields match on Thursday 28th of May. The match is open to all members & guests. 5.30p.m. Shotgun  start cost will be around £6 to include a buffet style meal afterwards. If anyone wishes to play please inform Eric Clifton, John Brownbill or Stuart Davis as soon as possible.

10th June 2009

20 Members travelled to The Windmill Golf Centre near Coventry to contest The George Booth Memorial & Geoff Lutner Pairs Trophies. Despite poor weather forcasts a fairly warm if cloudy day was enjoyed by all. The George Booth Memorial played over 10 holes in the morning as a Betterball Medal was won by Pete Williams & Bob Duckett with a tremendous score of 31 equating to 9 under par. Next home on a tight challenging course were Keith Brawn & Mark Haywood with 35 at 5 under par. After an excellent lunch players set out for the Geoff Lutner Pairs  trophy played as a Better ball Stableford with both scores to count on the par 3 holes. As in many recent events the team scoring heavily on the par 3's were at the head of the field with John Brownbill & Ekrem Kaya ( winning his first society event ) scoring 51 points.. This was sufficient to see them home from the pairing of Ian Moorby & Sammy Hind just beating Mike Baldwin & Leigh Clark. Both teams scoring 50 points with Ian & Sammy winning by virtue of a better back 9. An excellent evening meal rounded off a succesful day at this new venue for the Society.

Individual Matchplay Results:

12th July 2009

On Friday the 10th, 22 members including new member Tim Groves contested the Strokeplay Championship at Chesterton Valley Golf Club. Almost perfect conditions saw 8 players break nett par.The highlight of the afternoon was a  a gross 70 (1 under par) from Des Lyttle leaving him at nett 65 . Amazingly this was not enough to beat last man in Roger Collins who recorded his first society win with a tremendous 78 giving him victory with a nett 59.

During the afternoon two of the quarter finals of the knockout were contested with the following results.

Bob Duckett  beat Ekrem Kaya  3 & 2

Phil Plant beat Tom Hall 5 & 4

During the evening's presentation the Society Secretary expressed his concerns over the poor standard of communication within the Society regarding members entries to fixtures. Members are not informing the committe via the correct routes & this currently causing great difficulty in finding out who is & who is not attending fixtures. All members should now have been given a letter from the Secretary expressing his concerns over entries. All future fixtures will now  have their closing date brought forward to 2 weeks prior to any fixture instead of the normal 1 week to try & improve the situation. The comittee is currently looking at a new way of entering future fixtures. Information regarding this will be posted on the web site as soon as available.

12th August 2009

On Friday the 7th August 23 members travelled to Wishaw Golf Club to contest the F.A. Hewitt Trophy. Extremely wet conditions underfoot almost saw the event cancelled but a very pleasant warm afternoon allowed the competition to be completed. Most of the field struggled with the conditions with only 4 players scoring more than 30 points. Phil Latham with 31 points was the early pacesetter, eventually being overhauled by Ian Moorby with 34 points which lead until Phil Plant came in with 35 points which proved to be the winning score.

19th September 2009

A disappointing turn out of 23 members travelled to Lilleshall Golf Club on Thursday 17th to contest the Captain's Prize.Perfect weather greeted the field who found a tough but fair course ready for 27 holes to be played under Stableford conditions. The back nine of the afternoon round proved to be the decisive factor in deciding the eventual winner, Neil Clifton with a highly creditable 50 points.Second home was Leigh Clark on 49 points from Pete Williams also on 49 points with Leigh's back 18 of 35 points deciding the positions.

During the day several other season long trophies were also resolved, Dave Broome winning the Consistency Prize,Neil Clifton winning the Points competition & Pete Williams winning the Committee Cup.

During the afternoon round Ron Washbrook succesfully defended his Individual Matchplay title by defeating Phil Plant.

The evening meal was followed by the annual prize presentation, with speeches by the Captain, Chairman, & also Graham Davis current Vice Captain of Lilleshall who thanked the Society for choosing Lilleshall for their final event of the season. A most enjoyable day with good food, excellent hospitality from Lilleshall & some good golf.

 Minutes of Last Meeting

R.W read out the AGM Minutes from 2008 held on 12th November at Perton Park Golf Club.

 S.D accepted as True Record.

Matters Arising From Last Meeting

No matters arose from the last meeting.

Secretary’s Report

R.W read out his report on the season:

Overall I think the last year has been successful. I have had little or no problems regarding the booking of fixtures, and have found most clubs very helpful and flexible. I hope Eric had a good year and hope he enjoyed his year as Captain. Though the captain’s day fixture attendance was a little disappointing.

It is at this point that brings me onto the slightly worrying topic of dwindling numbers. I hope we can all try to encourage a few new members for the coming season, as this will keep the monthly fixture numbers up at a healthy 20 plus for each comp, which I’m sure you’ll all agree makes it better competition for all involved.

One last point where a problem occurred during 2009 was the receiving of notification of a player’s intention to play at a fixture. The point was raised at the Chesterton valley competition, and by way of circulation of e-mail addresses of as many members as possible especially the committee, we hope the situation can improve for 2010. There will be an excel spread sheet with members contact details on for those who wish to give them, anyone who isn’t on it can send details to Stuart or any committee member to keep things up to date.

A big thank you to S.D for his support during the last year and also to all the committee. A quick message to next years captain Jason to wish you luck and hope you enjoy your year.

S.D conveyed a vote of thanks.

Treasurer’s Report

J.B. gave his usual excellent detailed report on the society finances. The following below is a basic balance of the society up to 24th Nov 2009.  A full rundown of the 2009 income and expenditure is available upon request.   We had 36 members 3 of which paid £30 as late payers.

TOTAL                                                          £915.00

BALANCE 2008                                            £539.72

TOTAL CASH IN BANK  24-11-09           £ 897.22

SD conveyed a vote of thanks.

Match Secretary’s Report

S..D spoke of the Match Secretary’s position and the fact that it more or less runs itself since the evolution of the website. All comps ran smoothly and consistency ran better, from changes made from 2008.

The committee conveyed a vote of thanks.

Election Of Officers

R.W proposed S.D as chairman and J.B seconded

At this point S.D made a proposal, again as a repeat of 2008, that in light of the fact that the society had ran extremely smoothly during the past 12 months, all the present people standing should stand next year. This is of course if they were willing. A vote was taken and was unanimous in following S.D’s proposal, with all current members agreeing to stand. The full committee for 2010 is below.

Chairman:            Stu Davis

Secretary:            Ron Washbrook

Treasurer.            John Brownbill

Match Secretary: Pete Williams

Captain:              Jason Owen

Vice Captain;             T.B.A.

General Committee:

Bob Edwards

Bill McLachlan

Chris Munn

Dave Broome

Eric Clifton

 Fee’s And Fixtures

J.B stated that the current fees were not presenting any problems from his perspective as treasurer. S.D commented that there may a slight increase in fixture prices, but not really enough to warrant an increase in society fees. S.D also mentioned the possibility of 50th anniversary society outing in 2011, and that maybe a separate form of saving scheme that could be formed.

JB proposed that the fees for 2009 be frozen at £30.

It was agreed by all that the annual fee be frozen at  £30 with early payment reduction set at £25 if paid before Feb 19th.     2010.

Fixtures

Bill M listed Worcester, Droitwich, Sapey, and Enville for 2011?

Eric C listed Izaak Walton

Tom H listed West Midlands

Chris M listed Oswestry

Jason O listed Penn, Great hay, Little Lakes

Leigh C listed Cleobury Mortimer as an all day fixture.

R.W questioned if  the current fixture costing is ok, or do we want to pay more for some venues, it was agreed that the prices we are paying is ok.

It was agreed by everyone that we seek out new fixtures or ones we certainly haven’t played for many years.

 AOB

L.C spoke about the captain’s day attendance and what could be done to improve it in the future. The thought of using the football cards was mentioned again as a possibility to generate cash. The 2009 membership stood at 35 with 23 playing Captains Day.

B.D mentioned about trying to reduce the fee on Captain’s Day. J.B explained the reasoning behind this years non-refunding on the years last fixture, as we the committee voted to retain the money for extra funds for the society’s 50th birthday in 2011.

A general debate followed regarding various money saving methods, which included the possibility of money smoothing whereby you could pay regular amounts throughout the year so as to ease the burden of expensive fixtures. Although nothing was decided at this meeting, these ideas may come to fruition in time as the new season unfolds.

S.D spoke about the possibilities of losing 7 members from 2009, and the need to try to recruit as mentioned earlier. SD also mentioned of the slow uptake of new members directly from website enquiries. In 3 years only 3 people have joined by this method.

T.H proposed that we play a championship course as part of the 50th year celebrations.

B.D seconded.

J.O mentioned the possibilities of playing against other Dowty societies in 2010.

J.O mentioned about upping the proposed society fee to £30, but this was not taken any further as the annual fee had already been voted on earlier.

T.H spoke about new members handicaps and the problems of not really knowing their actual talent. But any problems along this line were probably rare and hopefully it has been managed in a satisfactory manner at the moment.

The Meeting Ended at 9pm.

Ron Washbrook. Secretary

As a reminder there will now be a list of confirmed entries on the web for each fixture.

6th April 2010

Members are reminded that this Friday 9th April is the closing date for the Chuch Stretton fixture.

Members are also reminded that to aid early organisation that they should E Mail either the Secretary,Treasurer or Chairman stating their intention to play.

13th April 2010

Following a committe meeting held today, it has been decided to change the Church Stretton fixture from the Fourball Shield to The Sid Willoughby Cup.

The competition will now be played as an Individual Stableford off Full Handicap. The Fourball Shield will now be contested at either Arscott or Severn Meadows dependent on entries.

18th April 2010

A tremendous turnout of 28 players including new members Richard Dunn, Dave Morris & Mark Forrest travelled to Church Stretton Golf Club to contest  the annual Fourball Shield. A beautiful afternoon high above the Carding Mill Valley amidst spectacular scenery saw most teams struggle to break par. Stableford scoring with the best 2 from 4 scores counting on each hole & all 4 scores counting on the par 3's eventually saw the Captains team of Jason Owen, Mike Baldwin, Chris Munn & Ekrem Kaya shoot a winning score of 101 points, 5 under for the round.

15th May 2010

24 members travelled to the redesigned Izaak Walton Club on the outskirts of Stone. A cool dry afternoon saw all players struggle with a tight course & difficult greens, reflected in the standard scratch score for the fixture being 77 (5 over par). Several players failed to complete the course with the eventual winner being Phil Latham with a nett score of 73. In second place with a nett score of 76 was Pete Williams who also had the best gross score with an 84. For the 2nd fixture running Chris Munn was also in the prizes finishing in 3rd place with a nett 76.

At the evening prize giving members were also reminded that the Annual Match against Greenfields had been arranged for Thursday 27 of May. Anyone wishing to play in the fixture should inform any committee man as soon as possible. A team of 18 players is needed for a 5.30 Shotgun start. The cost is £6 per player with a meal afterwards.

19th June 2010

Due to the unfortunate late injury to Steve Cooksey only 23 members travelled to Cleobury Mortimer Golf club to contest the George Booth Memorial & Geoff Lutner Pairs competitions. Wild cards were provided to cover Steve's abscence with a high scoring morning competition being won by Chris Munn,Neil Clifton & Mike Baldwin. In the afternoon a superb plus 8 score saw Sammy Hind & Ian Mooorby easily win the Geoff Lutners pairs competition. A new venue for the society provided excellent facilities with first class catering. The only downside to the day was the poor dress standard shown by some members for the evening meal & presentation. It is likely that similar dress standards may result in members being refused entry to the resturant at the next day fixture at Hawkstone Park as their dress code will be much tighter. If any member is in doubt to the dress standards required by both the Society & Golf clubs please contact any committe member for advice

2nd July 2010

The draw has been made for the next round of the Individual Knockout & is as follows:

Pete Williams v Ron Washbrook

Richard Dunn v Phil Latham

Phil Plant v Bob Edwards

Bob Duckett v Chris Munn

Matches are to be completed by 31st July

12th July 2010

The lowest turnout of the year,18 members travelled to Arscott Golf Club on Friday 9th of July to contest the F.A. Hewitt Cup. A superb setting with the course in excellent condition saw a fairly low scoring event being won by Mark Haywood with a 39 point haul. In second place with 36 points was Phil Latham & third by virtue of a better back nine was Roger Collings with35. During rthe fixture Phil Latham also claimed the first Semi Final place for the Individual Knock out in beating Richard Dunn 5 & 3

21st July 2010

Due to restrictions on size the existing website is now nearing capacity. As such the Society is now in the process of building a new website. Construction is still taking place & until completion both websites will be running hopefully in parallel. Eventually the existing website will be gradually wound down & the new one will take over. Access to the new site can be made by clicking on the link below.

Members will be informed when the total transfer has taken place & the old site "killed off"

7th Augut 2010

The biggest turnout of the year 27 members, including new member Paul Seeney travelled to the side of the River Severn at Highley to Severn Meadows Golf Club for  the Sid Willoughby Cup. A tight undulating course lead to a low scoring afternoon with Gary Picken winning on 36 points beating Richard Dunn also with 36 points by virtue of Gary's better back 9. In 3rd place with 35 points was Phil Latham. During the round the last 3 quarter finals of the Knockout were resolved with the following results.

RW read out the AGM Minutes from 2009 held on 25th November at Perton park golf club.

 SD accepted as True Record.

Secretary’s Report

RW read out his report on the season:

Firstly I feel the last year has been pretty successful, with average attendances up on the last few years.

I have encountered very little in the way of problems; most clubs have been very helpful and accommodating. A couple of the venues even giving free places and return visit vouchers.

I hope the new members enjoyed their first season; hopefully we can tempt back some old ex-members for the next season being the 50th year of the society.

The only blot on this year again, and I will leave this to AOB, was the filling in of cards correctly.

So a big thank you to all the committee for all their help over the past year, thanks to Jason for his good work as Captain and also as my chauffeur for most of the year, I hope you enjoyed your captaincy. Lastly a big thank you to Stuart for his tireless help and efforts especially on captain’s day. Also hope you have a great year next season on the 50th.

SD conveyed a vote of thanks.

Match secretary’s Report

SD spoke of the match secretary’s position and the fact that it more or less runs itself since the evolution of the website. At this point he thanked PW for his sterling work on the handicap committee of which Pete has done for a number of years. A point also Stuart wanted to clarify was the situation with the match play final. It is not obligatory to play the final on captain’s day; in fact it is probably better played before, as was this year’s match, as personal circumstances dictated.

The committee conveyed a vote of thanks.

Election Of Officers

RW proposed SD as chairman and PW seconded

At this point SD made a proposal, again as a repeat of 2009, that in light of the fact that the society had ran extremely smoothly during the past 12 months, all the present people standing should stand next year. This is of course if they were willing. A vote was taken and was unanimous in following SD’s proposal, with all current members agreeing to stand.

SD also added that maybe as its our 50th anniversary next year that we appoint a President for the society, and as he is a long standing member, proposed EC and the rest of the members present seconded this. EC accepted this position.

The full committee for 2011 is below.

President: Eric Clifton

Chairman: Stu Davis

Fee’s And Fixtures

JB Proposed that the fees be increased to £35 for 2011 with early payment reduction to £30.

RW seconded.

It was agreed by all that the annual fee be increased to £35 with early payment reduction set at £30 if paid before Feb 18th.     2011.

Fixtures

Many fixtures were mentioned for an extra date as the 50th Anniversary, these included:

·         Oswestry

·         Brocton

·         Ingestree

·         Wrekin

·         Welshpool

·         The Vale

·         Branston

·         Little lakes

·         Alsager

Also it was put forward we play some of the familiar courses of recent years including Worfield and Perton.  So 2011 will consist of 7 fixtures, 3 days and 4 afternoon matches.

AOB

RW questioned weather the current fixture starting times were ok or do we want to start earlier for some fixtures. There was not a problem so the fixture times will remain as previous years.

SD informed us of a possible special prize we can acquire for 2011, in the form of a Boulton Paul Defiant model. It was agreed that we should pursue this possibility, as it will be a unique award to the winner of the extra fixture.

Conversations took place on the subject of card marking; the general out come of this was that if you are not sure ask. It very unfortunate and embarrassing to have to take action against a wrongdoer, but the committee has to be consistent from previous experiences, to remain fair. There are numerous outlets to increase knowledge on card marking; these include websites, books and your local golf Pro. Above all else ask if you are not 100% sure. Hopefully this matter will improve during 2011.

The Meeting Ended at 9-04pm.

On the hottest day of the year so far 19 members travelled to Oswestry Golf Club on Friday 3rd June to celebrate the Societies 50th Anniversary. Playing a 9 hole Medal in the morning & an 18 hole Stableford in the afternoon members were presented with an tight but excellently prepared course. After a long hot day 3 members were tied on -1 using their combined medal / stableford  scores. The afternoon scores were used to decide that Richard Dunn would finish in 1st place beating Phil Latham into 2nd place with Bob Edwards finishing 3rd.

1st July 2011

The recent problems with the website have now been resolved & the site will gradually be brought back up to date over the next few days.

Due to illness & holidays only 16 members travelled north to Westwood Golf Club near Leek on Friday 24th of June to contest the F.A.Hewitt Trophy. One of the most technically difficult courses the Society has played for many years saw a low scoring competiton  won by Leigh Clarke with 33 points, with President Eric Clifton  in 2nd place with 32 points beating Richard Dunn by virtue of a better back 6 score.
Members were reminded during the evening that the next competition @ Great Barr is the Pairs Competition & members must enter this event with a partner.

24th July 2011

Another disappointing turnout of only 16 members travevelled the short distance down the M6 to Great Barr Golf Club. Members split into 8 teams of 2 to contest the annual George Booth & Geoff Lutner memorial trophies. The morning 9 hole medal competition was won by Ian Moorby & Peter Williams with a Better ball score of 34 . In 2nd place beating 4 other pairs by virtue of a better back 6 was Steve Cooksey & Leigh Clarke with a score of 35. After lunch the 8 teams embarced on a 18 hole stableford competition with again Ian & Peter being the victorious pairing with a Better ball score of 49 points. 2nd place was claimed by John Brownbill & Roger Collings with a score of 44 points.

                                                21st August 2011

Played as a bogey the in form Richard Dunn claimed his 3rd title of the year with a +3 score. In 2nd place with a +2 score was Roger Collings & in 3rd by virtue of a better  back 9 was Bob Edwards.

18th September 2011
20 members travelled to Lilleshall Hall Golf Club on Thursday 15th September for the final fixture of the season. Presented in its usual immaculate condition members found low scoring difficult to come by.A combined Medal / Stableford competition played over 27 holes eventually saw Ian Moorby winning his first Captain's Prize with a combined score of -4. In second place winning by virtue of a better afternoon score was Peter Williams with -5 & 3rd was Gary Picken. After an excellent evening meal the Captain thanked all of the members & committee for their support during the season. An excellent day was concluded as the Captain presented prizes to all the seasons winners.

Minutes of Last Meeting

RW read out the AGM Minutes from 2010 held on 17th November at Perton Park Golf club.

SD accepted as True Record.

Secretary’s Report

RW read out his report on the season:

I feel from my position, as secretary the last year has been generally trouble free, although the average attendances have been down compared to the last few years. This to me was disappointing especially being the 50th anniversary.  I especially feel for Stuart who maybe would have liked slightly higher attendances for this milestone year. Having said that the year I think was a success, playing a good variety of courses, with Trent ham, Oswestry and Lilleshall the highlights for me. I unfortunately missed the Westwood fixture in June, which apparently was a little quirky to say the least!

I hope all members enjoyed their golf season even if most of us lost out to the Richard Dunn road show in 2011 .On that note well done to Richard on a fabulous season, especially after his captains day disappointment of 2010.

As with last few years the membership numbers are slightly worrying, we lost more than we recruited this year and I’m sure most will agree we do not really want to be playing next season with any less than in 2011.

The only blot on this year again, and I will leave this to AOB, was the filling in of cards correctly.

So a big thank you to all the committee for all their help and support over the past year, thanks to Jason for being my travel buddy for most of the year.

Lastly a big thank you to Stuart for his tireless help and efforts especially on captain’s day.

One last point, I’m not sure if everyone is aware, but traditionally on captains day the year’s captain is presented with his medal. As Stuart was so busy as usual sorting out the results and prizes he never got to receive his medal. So at this point I would like to call upon Eric our president to present Stuart with his much-deserved memento.

SD conveyed a vote of thanks.

Match secretary’s Report

SD spoke of the match secretary’s position and the fact that it more or less runs itself since the evolution of the website. At this point he thanked PW for his sterling work on the handicap committee of which Pete has done for a number of years.

SD conveyed a vote of thanks.

Election Of Officers

RW proposed SD as chairman and PW seconded

RW Proposed EC as President

At this point SD made a proposal, again as a repeat of 2010, that in light of the fact that the society had ran extremely smoothly during the past 12 months, all the present people standing should stand next year. This is of course if they were willing. A vote was taken and was unanimous in following SD’s proposal, with all current members agreeing to stand.

SD also added that he would like to propose Roger Collings onto the handicap committee, everyone agreed, and Roger accepted.

Fee’s And Fixtures

JB spoke about the possibility of people paying a direct debit into the society account, to smooth out large one-off payments etc. Anyone wishing to do this can contact a member of the committee for further details.

Chubb’s golf society had been in contact this year with DGS, with a proposal to merge, a discussion transpired with the unanimous agreement that their members would be welcome to join us but we will not change our own identity/name.

A conversation also arose with regards to people not rejoining next year, and what we could do to encourage people to stay with us and also recruiting new members.

After many minutes of discussion, and in view of the fact we have a healthy bank balance, LC proposed the joining fee be reduced to £20 and be paid by the end of January 2012.  BM seconded.

RW questioned whether the current format of including snack food at all fixtures is still preferred. All members present unanimously agreed to stay as we are at this point.  He also mentioned start times for the afternoon matches. It was agreed to maybe start some closest fixtures at 1pm.

It was agreed by all, that 7 fixtures be retained for 2012 this was one more than previous years because of the 50th anniversary match. The 2012 calendar will however run over 7 months now, beginning in March. The fixture will consist of 4 afternoon and 3 day venues.

                                                        8th March

All members are reminded that the closing date for the Patshull Park fixture is now approaching & any member wishing to attend should enter by Friday 16th March latest.

24 March

Friday the 23rd of March saw an unusually early start to the Society year with 18 members making the short trip to Patshull Park to contest the F.A. Hewitt trophy. Due to a prior commitment new Captain Leigh Clark was unable to make the evening presentation & took the unusual step of making his first society speech on the first tee. In glorious sunshine Leigh led the players off for a most enjoyable afternoons golf. All players found scoring difficult but the eventual winner playing in his first Society event was Jim Stuart - Young  scoring 37 points from his 10 handicap. Society Secretary Ron Washbrook took 2nd place with 35 points & John Evans finished 3rd with 34 points eventually beating Society Chairman Stuart Davis by virtue of a better back 6 from their respective front 9's. Vice Captain Tom Hall stood in for Leigh at the evening presentation to round off a most enjoyable start to the season.

15th April
On Friday the 13th a low turnout of just 12 members travelled the short distance up the M6 to Barlaston Golf Club to contest the Strokeplay Championship. Played as a Medal in cool but dry conditions low scoring was found to be difficult due to the narrow fairways & recently hollow tined greens. Bob Edwards eventually emerged as the winner from Tom Hall by virtue of countback both players carding nett 73's. In 3rd place with a creditable nett 74 was Jason Owen. Tom also took the best Gross prize with an 82 beating Match Secretary Peter Williams with a better back 9. In these days of notoriously slow play it was good to see the leading 3 ball containing  Captain Leigh Clarke & "Flying Officer Hind" zooming around the course in just 3 hours & 18 minutes. Excellent food after the golf rounded off another enjoyable fixture.

25th April

Many congratulations go to Steve Cooksey who on Friday 20th April completed the gruelling Lands End to John O Groats cycle ride.Steve covered 1052 miles in 13 days solo without any back up crew or support. Initially Steve was just doing the ride for himself but, so many people have asked him what charity he was doing it for he has now decided that any money raised will go to Macmillan nurses. If anyone wishes to donate please contact Steve personally or see him at Trentham.
